Update from Lynne Riley for Georgia

Georgia Chamber Awards Rep. Lynne Riley with 'A' grade for 2011 Session:

Johns Creek legislator graded on support of pro-business measures

ATLANTA (May 26, 2011) - State Rep. Lynne Riley (R-Johns Creek) has earned an 'A' grade from the Georgia Chamber for her strong support of the state's business community during the 2011 legislative session. The Chamber released its first true legislative scorecard for the 2011-2012 General Assembly, which includes midterm grades for state House and Senate members based upon their votes on legislation deemed important to economic growth and job creation.

"Ensuring Georgia maintains a business-friendly environment that encourages job creation and economic growth should be the top priority for our legislature," said Georgia Chamber President and CEO Chris Clark. "We are certainly thankful to have a strong ally at the Capitol in Rep. Riley to partner with to protect Georgia's long-term economic future. The Georgia Chamber looks forward to continuing our work with her to make Georgia the most business-friendly state in the nation."

During the 2011 legislative session, Chamber members identified eleven bills to include in the report. Prior to votes being taken, the organization communicated its position to the Governor's Office and the General Assembly as well as the fact that the bills were eligible to be designated as "scorecard issues". Votes that legislators were graded on included health care, education, business and industry, legal, compliance, economic development, and the environment.

The All-New North Fulton GOP Breakfast:

June 11, 2011 - Horseshoe Bend Country Club, Roswell GA 30076

Doors open at 8:15 am, program begins at 9:00 am

Cost for breakfast is $12 with on-line registration or $15 at the door

The deadline for cities and counties throughout the state to file wish lists for a regional transportation referendum in 2012 has passed. The State of Georgia has been divided into 12 geographic regions that will vote in individual referendums to approve the projects selected by the ARC, the state planning transportation director and "regional officials".

Like Georgia's other 11 regions, the 10-county metro Atlanta region will vote on a list of projects and a 1 percent sales tax to fund them. Do you know what your city and county officials submitted? Do you feel comfortable knowing that you will pay extra for projects submitted by other cities in the region? Do you know how the project decisions are being made? Come to the breakfast and find out.

Our speakers are two very active in this issue:

Todd Long is Georgia's Director of Planning for Transportation, a post that reports to the governor. HB277, signed into law in 2010, gave him the power to pare down (or beef up) the wish list of projects submitted by local governments - within guidelines set by regional officials. While the ultimate decision is up to a roundtable of elected officials who will pick the final regional project list voters will consider in the all-or-nothing referendum, Todd Long's responsibility is to ensure solid projects make the list - and as a politician to ensure all parties feel heard. Leaders pick from his picks.

Long's position was created as a way to shift power from the state Transportation Board to the governor. Then-Gov. Sonny Perdue appointed Todd as the first person to the post, and Gov. Nathan Deal kept him on. The son, brother, nephew and husband of engineers, Long earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Georgia Tech. For his master's thesis, he wrote about attempts to stifle cut-through traffic in Roswell neighborhoods. He went right to work at the Georgia DOT and rose through the ranks. There, he oversaw road signs for park-and-ride lots for the 1996 Olympic Games.

Bob Ross is a retired Army officer and current small business owner in Fayette County's Peachtree City. He's been actively involved in grassroots political activity since chairing a 2009 campaign to recall one of the county's commissioners, and is a co-founder of the Fayette County Issues Tea Party.

While that Tea Party recognizes the significant transportation challenges in Atlanta Metropolitan Planning Area, they believe that Fayette County could best address its transportation issues outside of the House Bill 277 process."

North Fulton Amateur Radio League (NFARL) Field Day Event:

North Fulton Amateur Radio League (NFARL) Field Day Event - June 25-26, 2011

Field Day is the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) annual operating event for showcasing amateur radio capabilities during an emergency or disaster.

The North Fulton Amateur Radio League (NFARL) will hold its annual event at Waller Park Extension, 160 Dobbs Drive, Roswell, GA 30075. The event begins at 2:00 PM Saturday and runs continuously until 2:00 PM Sunday, - 24 full operating hours. As is the usual custom, NFARL will operate a Get-On-The-Air (GOTA) station for newly licensed amateurs and those who might be interested in amateur radio and want to give it a try. There will also be stations set up to send and receive in Morse code on a variety of amateur radio bands, voice stations on the amateur 20 and 40 meter bands, and, new for this year, an amateur radio digital station on a variety of bands. The digital station demonstrates the convergence of amateur radio and modern computer technologies as another methodology to reach out and touch the world.

Also new for this year, the North Fulton Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) team will operate on the 2 meter and 70 centimeter bands, demonstrating the many ways radio amateurs can get the word out "when all else fails". NFARL is extremely pleased and excited to have ARES join them this year and hope this is the start of many future cooperative activities at events like the annual Field Day.

As always, the general public is not only invited, but encouraged to visit the Field Day site. After all, the purpose of Field Day is for radio amateurs around the USA to showcase emergency communications and disaster preparedness capabilities to the general public.
